Among the preserved old houses in Hoi An Old Town, Tan Ky House stands out as a near-perfect example of an 18th century merchant's residence.
Even today, all across Vietnam, you'll see shopkeepers living above their places of business. The family that owns Tan Ky House (note the present tense) is no exception; for seven generations, the same family kept both house and shop on these premises, giving this Hoi An house its name (which means "Progress Shop") and staying on despite the decline of business in Hoi An and recurring floods that hit this riverside residence hard in the monsoon season.
Location of Tan Ky House - How to Get There
Tan Ky House is located in the heart of Hoi An Old Town in Vietnam. (To find out how to get here from elsewhere in Vietnam, read our article on Hoi An.)
From the Hoi An Japanese Bridge, walk about 300 feet down Bach Dang Street into Nguyen Thai Hoc Street. If you're approaching from the west, Tan Ky House is on the right, on 101 Nguyen Thai Hoc Street.
To enter Tan Ky House, you will need to present a ticket at the front of the house. Buy an Old Town ticket at any of the numerous booths around Hoi An Old Town - each ticket costs VND 90,000, or $5, permitting access to five heritage sites of your choice.
