Classic Laos with Muang La

Mostly hugging the main road in a longish stretch between Udomxai and Phongsali, Muang La is a very picturesque town. Aside of its general beauty, and attractive, ancient wat, the main reason for foreigners to visit this town is the hot springs. Welcome to beautiful Muang La.

  • Day 1 - Vientiane Arrival - City Tour

    On arrival in Vientiane, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. If time permits, your half day city tour enables us to see the major temples of Vientiane including Wat Sisaket- the oldest temple of thousands of miniature Buddha statues, and the former royal temple of Wat Prakeo which previously housed the famous Emerald Buddha Image. We also visit Lao national icon- That Luang Stupa, and we stop to take some pictures of the imposing Patuxay Monument which is Vientiane's own Arc de Triumph. Stay overnight in Vientiane.

    Day 2 - Vientiane – Udomxay - Muang La

    Following the morning at leisure, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight up to Udomxay. Here, we have the chance to visit the intriguing Pra Xack Kham Temple with its sacred Buddha image. The 400 years old legendary statue is said to have many supernatural powers, and is widely worshipped among the faithful local Buddhists. We stop in Muang La which is famous for its natural hot springs for the night. No activities are planned for the rest of the day, so you can walk around the village or just relax at the riverside retreat enjoying a massage or some time in the hot springs.     Day 3 - Muang La

    Today, we explore the local area and undertake an easy trek around the beautiful surrounding countryside visiting the numerous ethnic hill tribes that reside around the area. The evening can be spent back at the resort relaxing in the natural hot springs, taking a traditional massage and enjoying the excellent local Lao cuisine in the restaurant. Stay overnight in Muang La.

    Day 4 - Muang La - Luang Prabang

    Today, our trip will go through some of the most stunning mountain scenery so that you will find in South East Asia with plenty of opportunities to stop off at the various Khmu and H'mong villages along the way. In the mid afternoon, we will  reach to Luang Prabang where you have the rest of the day to relax and take in the enchanting city. You may wish to spend the evening exploring the local night market. Stay overnight in Luang Prabang.

    Day 5 - Luang Prabang City Tour

    Your full day city tour begins after breakfast, with a visit to the Royal Palace Museum which hosts a range of interesting artifacts. We then enjoy a short-guided tour seeing the city's oldest temple of Wat Sene and the magnificent Wat Xiengthong with its roofs sweeping low to the ground which represents classical Laotian architecture. Today, we also visit the impressive stupa of Wat Visoun and the shrine of Wat Aham. Stay overnight in Luang Prabang

    Day 6 - Luang Prabang - Khuang Si Waterfall - Pak Ou Caves

    Firstly, we visit the morning Phousi Market where you will see such diverse offerings as dried buffalo skin, local tea and saltpeter among the chickens, vegetables and hill-tribe weavings. Laos is also known for its traditional crafts, and today you will visit local villages of Lao ethnic minority groups at Ban Ouay- a Hmong village, Ban Ou- a Laoloum village and Ban Thapene- a Khmu village. This then takes us to the beautiful Khuang Si Waterfall where you can cool off with a refreshing swim in the pools or walk along the forest trails. We then return to Luang Prabang. This afternoon, we embark on a cruise upstream on the Mekong River which also gives us a breathtaking view of the tranquil countryside before reaching to the mysterious Pak Ou Caves. Two linked caves crammed with thousands of gold lacquered Buddha statues of various shapes and sizes left by pilgrims. Along the way, we stop at the village of Ban Xanghai where they make the local rice wine. On return, we disembark the boat to visit traditional villages, and continue taking a short drive to Ban Phanom- a village famous for its hand weaving. Stay overnight in Luang Prabang.

    Day 7 - Luang Prabang Depature

    Have time at leisure before you will be transferred to the airport in time for your flight.

Nam Ou River Cruise

The Nam Ou (Rice Bowl River) is one of the most important rivers of Laos. It runs 448 km from Phongsaly to Vientiane. Along with the Mekong, the Nam Ou is the only natural channel suitable for large-draft boat transportation. Near its confluence with the Mekong are the Pak Ou Caves which is famous for their Buddha statues. This full-day trip includes an enjoyable cruise along the Nam Ou, a stop at Pak Ou cave and a boat ride down the Mekong to Luang Prabang.

  • Day 1 - Vientiane Arriv al - City tour

    On arrival in the Laos capital of Vientiane, you will be met and transferred to your centrally located hotel. Vientiane is a charming and fascinating capital with an interesting mix of Lao, Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, French, and American influences. After a short rest, we start visiting the major sights of the capital including Wat Sisaket- the oldest temple with thousands of miniature Buddha statues, and the former royal temple of Wat Prakeo which previously housed the famous Emerald Buddha Image. Enroute to Lao’s national icon, the precious and sacred structure of That Luang Stupa, you will have the opportunity to take some pictures of the imposing Patuxay Monument which is known as Vientiane’s own Arc de Triumph.     Day 2 - Vientiane - Vang Vieng on road

    We leave the capital early for our journey northbound. We will see some breathtaking scenery enroute as we pass through spectacular countryside towards the mountainous region. Along the way, we visit the busy and colorful market of Thalat where various hill tribes come to trade goods and buy provisions. A next stop of our trip is Vang Xang which is famous for the archeological site dating back 11th century. We reach our final destination Vang Vieng which nestled on a bend of the Nam Song River. Its stunning scenery with limestone outcrops remains unspoiled despite recent developments with the advent of tourism. After checking into your hotel, you are at your own leisure.     Day 3 - Vang Vieng – Luang Prabang on road

    Heading 2km out of Vang Vieng town, we explore the famous caves of Tham Jang which was once used by the local people as a hideout from Chinese invaders. We also cross the river to Ban Huai Ngai- a very pleasant village to explore the different lifestyles of the locals. Upon leaving Vang Vieng, the roads begin to deteriorate; however the stunning mountain scenery makes an interesting journey. We wind our way through the mountains to Luang Prabang. This town with its gleaming temple roofs, fading colonial architecture and stunning mountain backdrop has been claimed by UNESCO to be the best preserved traditional city in South East Asia . There is little traffic on Luang Prabang roads and monks in orange robes scurry in all directions carrying umbrellas to shade themselves from the sun. Stay overnight in Luang Prabang.

    Day 4 - Luang Prabang – City Tour

    The former Royal Palace has been turned into a National Museum (closed Tuesdays). This interesting structure displays a collection of artifacts reflecting the richness of Lao culture dating from the days of the early kings right through the last sovereign. Today, we also have enough time to explore some other landmarks including the impressive stupa of Wat Visoun, the shrine of Wat Aham, the city's oldest temple of Wat Sene and Wat Mai with its five tiered roofs. A visit to Luang Prabang would be incomplete without ascending the 329 steps to the top of Phousi Hill for a beautiful sunset view of the city and its glowing reflection on the Mekong River.     Day 5 - Luang Prabang - Pak Ou Caves - Weaving village

    Today, we continue our city tour, seeing the magnificent Wat Xieng Thong which nestles at the meeting of the Mekong and the Nam Khan River. The temple structures are decorated in various ways with gilded stuccoes and doorways. The back wall has an intriguing large flame 'tree of life’ pattern set in colored glass mosiacs. We then embark on a cruise upstream on the Mekong River which also gives us a taste of the tranquil countryside and an interesting visit to the mysterious Pak Ou Caves, two linked caves crammed with thousands of gold lacquered Buddha statues of various shapes and sizes left by pilgrims. Along the way, we stop at Ban Xang Hai where the local rice wine is produced. On our return, we drive to the famous weaving village of Ban Phanom where shoppers have a chance to try their hand at bargaining. Stay overnight in Luang Prabang.

    Day 6 - Luang Prabang Departure

Luang Prabang City

Muang Ngoi Culture Trek

Laos is a country where visitors can really escape from the stress of modern life and step into the tranquility of a world dominated by Buddhism. One of the highlights of Laos is the former royal capital of Luang Prabang in the northern mountains. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, there is little traffic on the streets and monks in saffron robes carrying black umbrellas to shade themselves are a familiar sight. You can also witness tribal minorities trading fresh produce in their resplendent traditional costumes, or sample a bowl of local noodle soup, among the cluster of food stalls.

    After breakfast, you will be transferred by traditional boat up stream on Nam Ou river to Ban Hadsapheui (Khamu village). We will then begin trekking uphill to Ban Kioukhan for about 4 hours. Local picnic lunch is on the way. Arrive in Ban Kioukhan in the afternoon. Dinner and overnight in traditional village homestay.

    Day 3 - Ban Kioukhan Trek to Ban Nam Tap and Ban Houay Sene

    Place Transport: 
    Meals: Breakfast - Lunch - Dinner
    After breakfast, we begin trekking to Ban Nam Tap (Hmong village) and Ban Sengsavang (Khmu ethnic village). Today, we will walk for about 6 hours. Take in great mountain views this morning. After lunch, we continue to trek to Ban Houy Sene where we will eat dinner and stay overnight in the home of a villager.

    Day 4 - Ban Houay Sene – Nong Kiew - Luang Prabang

    Place Transport: Boat->Car 
    Meals: Breakfast
    After breakfast, take a local boat to Nong Kiew and van back to Luang Prabang.

    Cruise the Mekong River to visit the famous and sacred Pak Ou Caves. Since the 16th century, the local people have brought images of the Buddha to place in the caves—by now there are thousands. Visit the village of Ban Xang Khong where weaving of traditional Lao textiles takes place on ancient wooden looms.

    Day 3 - Luang Prabang - Kuang Si Waterfall

    If you wish, get an early start and participate in the traditional Lao rite of giving alms to the monks. Every morning, some 300 monks file through the city silently collecting offerings. After breakfast, drive to the beautiful Kuang Si Waterfall. The falls cascade over many calcified tiers and down several hundred feet into a series of cool, turquoise pools. You can cool off with a swim before returning to Luang Prabang. Enjoy a local lunch before returning to the hotel for an evening at your leisure.

    Day 4 - Luang Prabang – Xiang Khoang

    An eight-hour drive to the mountainous plateau of Xiang Khoang is a great way to see more of rural Laos. There are plenty of stops along the way to stretch your legs and take photos of the spectacular views.

    Day 5 - Xiang Khoang – Plain of Jars - Old Town in Muang Khoun

    After breakfast, our guide will take you to the Plain of Jars- one of the more mysterious sites in Laos. Visit the Old Town, the stupa and temple at Muang Khoun. Enjoy lunch in a local restaurant before returning to the hotel.

    Day 6 - Xiang Khoang – Vang Vieng

    Take a six-hour drive along picturesque winding roads to Vang Vieng. There are stunning vistas of towering limestone karst hills around every turn. Enjoy your lunch along the way. The afternoon is free for you to relax on the scenic banks of the Song River or explore the lovely town.

    Day 7 Vang Vieng

    Enjoy the scenic wonders of Vang Vieng at your leisure. You can go inner-tubing in the cool and lazy river. Try your hand at kayaking or caving, or just relax and enjoy the amazing views from your balcony.

    Day 8 - Vang Vieng – Vientiane City Tour

    Drive three hours to Vientiane. In the afternoon, you will visit the major sights of the capital including the oldest Wat Sisaket, the temple with thousands of miniature Buddha statues and the former royal temple of Wat Prakeo which previously housed the famous Emerald Buddha Image. On the way to Lao's national precious heritage- the famous and sacred structure of That Luang Stupa, you will stop en route to take some pictures of the imposing Patuxay Monument which is well known as Vientiane's own Arc de Triumph.

    Day 9 - Vientiane – Fly to Pakse - Bolaven Plateau

    After a very early breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Pakse. Your first adventure here is an easy four-hour hike up to the Bolaven Plateau. This hike goes through a local village, coffee plantations, over a hanging bridge, and on to the plains. Huge boulders, pine trees, epiphytes and wild orchids abound. Return to the hotel for late lunch. The afternoon is free for you to explore Pakse.

    Day 10 - Pakse - Wat Phou - Elephant Camp – 4000 Islands

    Meals: Breakfast - Lunch
    Drive south to the famous Khmer Temple complex of Wat Phou. This UNESCO World Heritage Site represents the easternmost border of the Khmer empire. Continue on to an Elephant Camp to see how handlers (“mahouts”) train these giant and friendly beasts. Ride one of the friendly pachyderms to the top of Phou Asa to see mysterious ruins there. After lunch, you’ll continue going to 4000 Islands by car and boat.

    Day 11 - 4000 Islands - Khone Phapeng & Li Phi Falls

    The section of the Mekong River that runs through southern Laos boasts thousands of tiny islands. This morning, you’ll cruise through this tropical paradise to the largest waterfalls in Asia, Khone Phapeng and Li Phi Falls. If you’re lucky, you might see some of the 50-100 Irrawaddy (freshwater) dolphins that make 4000 lakes their home. Spend the afternoon to relax or explore an island on your own.

    Day 12 - 4000 Islands – Pakse Depature

    After breakfast, drive north to Pakse airport for your flight.
